About Jen

I have been a primary school teacher in California for 25 years. I have a Masters degree with a focus on social and emotional learning. Teaching phonics and the basics of reading is something that I love. I have taught students from ages 6-11, many of whom are English learners. I believe that just about anyone can learn to read with enough support and practice while having some fun along the way.

It's simply just watching the students learn. It's so rewarding to watch them smile when they finally "get-it".

I have taught grades 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. I believe that students of any age can learn. I have a Masters degree in Education and 25 years of experience.

About the lesson

First I need to know what their goals are. I also need to find out what skills they already have or determine if this is a true beginner. After that, I can start planning lessons that are catered to that child. It's always good to meet the student where they are and then move forward.

I have worked with English only students as well as English learners from all over the world. Most of my students are from the US, the Middle East, and Mexico.

*Don't always go for the cheapest tutors.
*Students learn better when they have a good relationship with their teacher.
*The instructor should assess each student before instruction begins.

Details

I believe that tutoring for very young kids (Pre-K, K and 1) should not be longer than 30 min per session. It is very hard for children to focus for much longer than that. I would suggest that 45-60 minutes be the goal for grades 2 and up. It just depends on the attention span of the student.

$20 for 30 min.
$30 for 45 min.
$35 for 60 min.

It's very important to make sure that the teacher have one session to asses the students' current abilities. Every student is different, with a different knowledge base and therefore a particular lesson may be beneficial for one student but not the next.

Also, I will need five minutes at the end to speak with the parents of the younger kiddos. I want to make sure that we all go over the skills taught so that the parents may continue supporting their child after the session.
