About Tessa
By Teaching, We Learn, comes from the Latin maxim Docendo Discimus. By Teaching, we learn allows each student to learn to mastery by teaching what they know back to me. Research shows that we rarely retain new information. However, by daily review of concepts, we retain more of that information. But, research shows that we retain over 90% of new information and mastering the concept by giving the student the opportunity to become the teacher.
This is the main reason I love education. I never stop learning, and never stop mastering the concepts that I present to each student. I have extensive knowledge and excellent teaching techniques that will ensure that your student is recieving the highest quality support. Some of the teaching techniques I use are:
Incremental review, memorization through association (songs and chants), and nurturing critical thinking and problem solving skills.
These techniques will build a foundation of confidence in your student so that they can face any challenge and navigate them independently.
I worked in Elementary Education for several years as a reading and English teacher before I began educating my own children and performing volunteer work as a distance English teacher to a student in Brazil. I have since worked as an independent researcher of educational philosophies and teaching techniques. So you could say I am a professional student!

The first step is to fill out a needs assesment form. This tells me how I can best help. The second step is an evaluation process where I would watch a student complete a simple task and observe how they complete it. This allows me to see their learning style, their personality, their problem solving skills and other thresholds that may be holding them back.
I've worked with both Native english speaking students and ESL students from Kindergarten to 6th grade. I have also tutored adults, I just don't have as much experience with them.

Details
I charge $10 per 30 minute session. Most students do not stay engaged for much longer than that. I am happy to negotiate the fee if there is a hardship.
