About Lauren

Learning to read and write well are essential skills that children, and adults alike, should master. While not all of us are naturally born with this skill, there are so many ways that we can learn and grow to be better writers.

My name is Lauren and I am a freelance writer who also enjoys tutoring students, in elementary school through college, how to write well. My goal is to help my students develop their reading comprehension skills, understand directions given by their teachers/professors, and assist them in their assignments until they feel confident enough on their own.

Education: I graduated with honors from California Baptist University with a Bachelor's in Journalism and a minor in English.

Qualification:

-I have tutored American and Chinese students for over five years

-I am currently a freelance writer and professionally write on a daily basis

-I worked for my university's student publications as a section editor and writer

-I am dyslexic and understand how frustrating learning can be for some children, but learned how to overcome my own struggles and excel in my education

-I have six siblings, the three youngest are adopted from Africa. My siblings did not speak English, so I know how to work well with those who English is not their first language

About the lesson

Before working with a new student, I like to make sure the parents' or student's goals and expectations are clear. Typically, this can be done over email or in person at a coffee shop. I simply want to ensure that all expectations are clear, so I can be confident I can meet them, before accepting a new student.

Meeting with a tutor can make a child feel a little nervous and maybe even embarrassed. On my first meeting I typically enjoy trying to learn more about my students. I ask them what their favorite shows are, games, books, hobbies etc. I feel this sets the tone for the rest of the sessions. I also try to learn the child's learning style to better assist him or her and also go over a homework assignment or bring my own material on the first visit so I can gauge where the student is at.

After this meeting, I can continue to work on homework or bring my own assignments. It depends on what the student needs and what the parents are looking for. Either way, I aim to keep open communication with the parents and involve them in the process.
