About Simona

I teach English as second language to adults from beginner to advanced, and also provide exam preparation classes. My teaching style is primarily informed by the Communicative Approach, as my learners need to be able to use the language in real life. As adults, the use of properly levelled authentic materials is much more interesting and motivating than the traditional textbooks that are generally aimed at a different age group with very different interests. This way, my learners get a sense of achievement when completing tasks simulating real situations, with authentic everyday language used by native speakers.

Further, I am particularly keen on getting students immersed in the culture related to the target language. I believe that an understanding of the underlying mentality of native speakers really improves and enriches overall communication. Additionally, I am an adept of teaching students to monitor themselves and develop the ability to self-correct, because at the end of the course, they will be on their own and I want them well-prepared for that moment.

I share Mandela's view that "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart." Enabling meaningful and profound communication between individuals separated by their primary language is what motivates me to teach languages.

Having changed countries many times in my life so far, I experienced first-hand the need to acquire languages at a highly proficient level in order to be able to live in the respective countries as a native. Once at that level, I could actually see the sense of relief on the faces of native speakers, and I realized the peace of mind that they experienced knowing that I fully understand them with all the subtleties of communication. This was and still is a truly empowering and liberating experience, knowing that I have fully broken down that specific language barrier. This is what I want my learners to experience as well. When they achieve this and let me know that I had a small contribution in their language learning process is most rewarding for me as a teacher.

I'm an First-class LLB International Law graduate from a UK University and a TESOL-certified teacher by the Arizona University.

About the lesson

I normally arrange for a free-of-charge introductory session to know each other, discuss the student(s)' objectives, do a quick assessment of their English level and give detail about my teaching method and techniques.

I focus on teenagers (16+) and adults who require improvement in their general English level as well as working professionals who require Business English skills.

Try to have a chat with the teacher before starting out. This intro meeting should help you decide whether the teacher is right for you. The learning process requires good rapport and a harmonious personal relationship and these are usually instinctive. If this is missing, you'll have no enthusiasm to go to class.

- What's their end goal? Where, when and what do they need to use English for?

- Do they need to take an English exam? Do they need a certificate?
