About Tavia

My name is Tavia and I am a future professor. As a current Ph.D. student training to become a university professor, I am extremely passionate about teaching. I have had over two years of tutoring and mentoring experience. In addition, I have had several teaching assistant positions during my undergraduate years. Currently, I am also a teaching assistant in my doctoral program at Pennsylvania State University.

I love interacting with students. I believe that every student is teachable and the job of the teacher is to find out what sparks that student's interest and try to adjust the method of teaching in order for the student to comprehend and enjoy the lesson.

I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was a child. However, as I grew older the subject I thought I would teach changed as I learned what I liked and disliked. I am currently in a doctoral program training to be a philosophy professor.

I have a bachelor's degree in philosophy and political science. I have had 4 years of combined tutoring, mentoring, and teaching experience. I am currently in a doctoral program training to be a university professor.

About the lesson

My process is on the first meeting, try to get to know the student. Their academic likes and dislikes, what area they struggle in, what their goals and expectations are for the tutoring session short term (and long term if necessary), and in what ways they want me to help them overcome their academic struggles or achieve their academic goals.

Once those standards are communicated and set, I start with the area where the student needs the most help.

I have worked with mentoring and helping high school students with their homework. The majority of my experience has been teaching and reviewing/assessing/grading undergraduate college students' exams and writings.

Make sure the teacher understands what your expectations are and what goals you are trying to reach through tutoring. Also, make sure the tutor is a great communicator and speaks accessibly.
