About Mitzy

I genuinely enjoy creating opportunities for my students, and sharing music as a source of joy, expression, and fulfillment!

I am adaptable and truly appreciate the perspective of my students, and will go above and beyond to create the best experience possible.

As an example, in one of my in-school programs for 3-5 graders, our concert was cancelled for the year due to coronavirus, though I continued teaching them online. Together, we organized an online recital, designing an e-vite, planning our program, and deciding it would be a "vampire concert" where all performers would flip their screens to appear to be hanging upside down. All the students worked hard and I can't wait to hear their final product this Wednesday.

Just about everything! I enjoy getting to know students and spending time with them, the creative challenges of choosing appropriate and engaging music and studies, the excitement of organizing performances, and the joy of sharing music.

I started teaching while still in High School. I transferred into a different school with a much smaller music program than my previous school district, and I was asked by my Band teacher to take on a few younger students as private students to raise the level of the music program in that area.

Since, I have gone on to teach at summer camps, community music conservatories, within my own private studio, in public schools, and through outreach programs.

I have a Masters in Music from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and my Bachelors in Music Performance from SUNY Purchase College Conservatory of Music.

As a teacher I have over 10 years of experience, and am on faculty at multiple community conservatories.

About the lesson

I first asses their level and discuss their interests, musical and otherwise. Then, I plan for their development in musicality, self expression, and technique through a variety of methods chosen to be most appropriate and of course enjoyable and engaging! I'm all about joy and excitement in music, and I want my students to love flute lessons.

I have worked with students aged 5 to 65 from diverse backgrounds, including those with physical disabilities and students who are neurodiverse.

The bulk of my teaching is centered around the ages of 8-18, but I am comfortable with other ages.

My students have gone on to study music in specialized high schools, compete in regional competitions, and achieve other goals! I always provide a wide variety of performance and competition opportunities, to fit the goals and interests of every student.

I would suggest meeting a few and seeing how you connect. A student - teacher relationship is a very important one, especially since it is often one on one! While you may not always see eye to eye, you should feel comfortable expressing yourself and there should be mutual respect and it should be a safe space for you.
