The very first thing I do with all of my new students is I get as strong a sense as possible of where they are coming from as they are approaching engaging a tutor. I want to know if they have taken the test they're studying before, if so, how have they done, and most particularly, how they are studying now. I am especially keen to understand my new student's mindset. I want to know if they feel beat up by their test and they are close to throwing in the towel, or if they're completely new to all of it, or if they're feeling great, but just looking for that little extra push that will put them over the top.

From there, I go from asking where my students are in their preparation to seeing it for myself via a practice/diagnositic exam. In no field should data drive instruction as much as it does in test prep, so I want to see in detail where a student is doing well and where they are struggling. Those insights inform an instructional and support plan going forward.

Once we know where we are and where we need to go, we get started. I believe that hard work is a choice we make every day, and I try my hardest to push my students to their potentials by encouraging them to have their energy and work ethic match mine.

I have engaged with students across all spectrums of the test prep universe. I've worked with high scorers looking to enter the stratosphere that will unlock the finest schools, students just trying to reach a bar to get into their local schools, and also students who have special needs that require accommoadation on standardized tests.

The first question a student must answer is one that does not lend itself well to any question you can actually ask: do you fit with your tutor? Tutors come in all shapes, styles, and sizes just as students do, so there's no reason to expect that every tutor you encounter will be your cup of tea. You need to trust your tutor, be able to communicate freely and comfortably with her, and be willing to accept their instruction and constructive criticism. For example, if you're sensitive, do not choose a plainspoken tutor who is not likely to devote much time to tending how well you receive her feedback.

Second, and this is particularly relevant in high-stakes test prep, you must be sure your tutor is tutoring becuase they have some skill with teaching, not just becuase they did incredibly well on the exam you're taking. Do not fall into the trap of believing that being gifted enoguh to score 179 on the LSAT means you can empower others to do the same. Doing well on a test and teaching others how to do well on a test are two different things.
