About Cassie

My name is Cassie, and I would love to help you on your journey to understanding chemistry, biochemistry, or anatomy and physiology. I graduated from Lawrence University with a BA in Biochemistry, an interdisciplinary in Neuroscience, and a minor in Psychology. I've worked as a Chemistry Stockroom Assistant, Biochemistry Lab Assistant, a Project Engineer at a paper testing lab, and as a tutor for a technical college in the areas I mentioned above. During my time working as a college level tutor I was the sole recipient of the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) scholarship twice. The TLC is the overseeing body of the tutoring program at the institution where i tutored.

Tutoring is special to me because it merries the two things I love most: teaching and learning. I find helping students not only with content but with time management, study skills, organization tips, etc to be fulfilling. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to continue studying what I find fascinating while allowing me to put my teaching and leadership skills to practice - something I consider myself well adept to perform.

I hope to utilize my wealth of knowledge on science subjects and my refined leadership skills to aid students in understanding core concepts while developing their study skills and maximizing their confidence in themselves and their ability to master science!

What I enjoy most about tutoring is not only the opportunity to engage in conversation about topics that I love but witnessing the student reach that moment of clarity and understanding of a topic they thought they may never master. It is infinitely rewarding to see things fall into place and click in their minds. I can see the stress and anxiety lift from their shoulders as they gain confidence in their abilities to tackle difficult subjects. I frequently check-in with my students as the lesson progresses to gauge their level of comfort or frustration so to hear that reply, "That makes so much more sense now!", is truly a magical feeling for me.

My first opportunity to tutor as a paid position was at Lawrence University teaching Elementary Statistics. Then, I was chosen and hired as the Biochemistry Lab Assistant where my duties included set-up/tear down, solution preparation, and aiding students in their performance and understanding of the assigned labs. After graduation I was hired at a paper testing lab where I quickly rose through the ranks from intermittent employee to back-up Area Leader to Area Leader of my own division and finally to Project Engineer. Here, I was able to engage in teaching as I wrote and trained other team members to perform Standard Operating Procedures. Finally, I returned to college to add a Clinical Lab Sciences certification to my BA, and it is here where I work tutoring students virtually while being a student myself.

About the lesson

I like to use the first meeting with a new student by following a 5,10, 30 format. A 5, 10, 30 format breaks down to: 5min for introductions, 10min to discuss areas of struggle, 30min to engage the content, 10min to discuss future goals, and 5min to plan the next meeting.

I have worked with a range of students including those with learning barriers. Tutoring is not just about retelling the content but about giving the student the tools they need to be successful on their own in regards to learning.
