About James
I carefully customize my teaching style for each student, assuring the pacing and material are right for everyone. My goal is to help my students to see the value in, and ultimately be able to speak and express themselves through the language of music, no matter the context. All genres and styles are welcome in the lesson room, as well as players of varying skill levels. Just like verbal language, music has both a structured, scientific aspect, and a loose, flowing, colloquial one. I aim to balance my instruction so that both of these sides will help shape the student into a well-rounded, level-headed player to whom musical bliss comes easy.
I personally have been playing guitar for 11 years, and am in my third year of studying music at the University of Miami.
The cliche is pretty accurate: teaching's a pretty good way to learn. Teaching guitar lessons not only allows me to understand the concepts I teach more deeply, it also allows me to look at my instrument from the perspective of each of my students, enriching my own relationship with the guitar. Moreover, I love people, and teaching puts me in contact with so many different people. Finally, as music is my deepest passion, it feels almost like my duty to pass down that passion as unadulterated as I can. Seeing my students' passion and dedication grow on their own is truly one of the best experiences I'm lucky to have.

For students with no prior experience playing guitar, I like to start at a very basic level, explaining terminology that's useful for discussing music and the guitar itself. My next priority is supplying new students with exercises that will help to acquaint them with the instrument, easing their fingers into confidently controlling the strings and frets. From there, we will begin to dive into the deep study of music theory, including chords, scales, and their functionalities, while learning and applying these new concepts to simple tunes. Once the student demonstrates some fluency as a player, I will begin to aim some focus on improvisation, music's most fun and expressive technique.

James is an awesome teacher. For a beginner like me he was super helpful getting me to understand the basics rather than just giving me chord shapes to play. He was always engaged and has great taste in music too.
James is a very knowledgeable guitar teacher who obviously loves what he does. I approached him as a beginner and he approached me with a very thoughtful agenda. He seems to know how to not only enable you to play the guitar, but also to understand it and music more generally so that you have tools to improve on your own. He's also a very easy going, energetic, and humble guy who happens to make some really good bread.
