About Bob

I’ve spent time studying learning styles and how the brain processes a new skill, like music. I use techniques that optimize the learning process - when certain skills are introduced, when and how to practice, how to isolate certain brain vs motor functions, etc...

I started teaching music years ago at a summer camp for children with heart disease. They have 5 days on Catalina Island and very limited time in front of an ukulele or guitar. My goal is to get those kids playing music before they leave the island so they feel like they can play an instrument. I do this every year for groups of kids coming through the camp (Camp Del Corazon for those interested). This gave me really good training in helping people to play recognizable music quickly.

I’ve found that if I can get someone playing music successfully right away (children or adults), they’ll have the confidence and momentum to continue learning and will develop a fun and important life-long skill.

I follow a rule for myself, to only do things that make me happy. I work as a performer which I love, but I also have a passion for teaching and inspiring others. Connecting with people and helping them reach their goals is a big part of my own personal growth. I feel very lucky that I get to do the things I love and help others do the same.

About the lesson

We’ll discuss your goals: What style of music do you want to play? Where do you envision yourself playing - at home alone, on stage at The Troubadour, around a campfire? Is there a song or upcoming performance you need to work on?

I’ll find out a little about your experience. If you play other instruments, we can use that as a jumping off point. I’ll also get a sense of your learning style. Everyone learns differently and I’ll tailor your lessons to your learning style. A visual learner might get more handouts with chords and strum patterns written down. An auditory or kinesthetic learner might do better by recording a video of me playing something and copying what I’m doing.

For brand new players, we're going to quickly cover four chords that can be used to play hundreds of songs. This will get you playing recognizable music quickly – that’s the fun part. And then we’ll build from there, at your pace.

Currently my youngest student is 6 years old and my oldest is 85. I teach individual lessons as well as group classes to both children and adults.

I have experience working with children on the autism spectrum as well as kids with ADHD.

My students are often beginners, but I’ve also taught professional musicians who are transitioning to another instrument and have worked as an on-set ukulele coach for the TV show “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”.

Playing an instrument well and teaching well are two completely different skill sets. A good instructor needs to have both. In the initial interview or lesson, make sure you connect well with your teacher and see that they have a communication style that works for you. They need to have an understanding of the learning process as well as a good sense of how information should flow to a new student.
