About Jordan

Africana/Black Studies is my passion! I recently graduated from CSUN with a Bachelor's degree in Africana Studies. During my time in college, I made the Dean's List four times for a high GPA. My writing (Black creative writing and Africana research) has earned me two journal publications. My strengths and areas of special interest are Black Psychology, African and African American History, and Black Literature. Along with my formal education, I have my personal lived experience that helps to bring the subject matter to life. Part of what makes Black Studies so interesting is the fact that it is a living curriculum. All of what we learn can be seen in real time affecting the community. Black Studies has changed my life and inspired me to become a lifelong learner and agent of change in my community. I hope to share that passion and motivation with other students!

I love to see students develop their own excitement and pasion around the subject. I really enjoy finding a delivery method or teaching style that works best for each individual and watching their own motivation drive them to make their own discoveries with my help.

Once I found my love for Black Studies, it became really important to me to pass along this knowledge. I knew early in my college career that I wanted to help others see the value in this information and how accurate history and culturally diverse curriculum can enhance our understanding of the world and strengthen our self concept.

I have a B.A. in Africana Studies from California State University, Northridge.

About the lesson

I have done peer to peer learning in which I instructed people of a similar age group (college students). I have also helped to teach elementary aged children ages 9-12 yrs.

I would say be honest and open about your knowledge of the subject matter. The most important advice I could give would be to ask any and all questions and be ready to communicate with your tutor about what really makes you passionate about Black Studies!

I cofounded a podcast/zoom meeting group with a friend of mine from college (a fellow Africana Studies major) called Collective Liberation Study. W recently had our first zoom meeting with participants who joined the call. Our topic was Revolutionary Black Women. It was really great getting to talk to people about this topic that I am passionate about. We met with all kinds of people! Some of them had prior knowledge and some had none at all. It was such an awesome experience getting to connect with each person and learn from each other.
