About Rachel

I am a college professor and love teaching. Part of the joy of being an educator is getting to share the best parts of the material one-on-one with students. I want to help folks make the jump from high school to college, and from college to their career by supporting you in whatever way you might need. I know what I takes to succeed as a University student and I can help you gain the skills and understanding to set you up for success in school and beyond.

I have a Bachelors with a double major in Communication Studies and Gender and Women's Studies. I have a Masters in Communication Studies where I spent time coaching Speech and Debate. I also have a PhD in American Studies with two graduate certificates: one in Race and Social Justice and the other in Women's Studies. I have multiple teaching awards and care deeply about helping students that need a little extra support.

I started teaching as a Master's student. I taught public speaking, debate, and feminist studies courses my first few years. Then, I went to school for my doctorate and taught American Studies courses on the history of race and social injustice in America for 8 years before becoming a professor.

I have a PhD in American Studies focusing on the history of race, gender, and sexuality and have been teaching at Universities across the U.S. for the last 10 years.

I like to take students where they are at and build competency and confidence. Together, we will work on any necessary skill building, content knowledge development, and self confidence to help them shine as the scholars they can be. Success in school can be greatly improved by having a well developed set of skills, understanding, and belief that you can do it.

I have coached high school debate, taught first year college students, graduate students doing their Master's degrees, and community members seeking to just learn more about U.S. history. I have a diverse teaching background.

Find someone that gets you excited to learn about the subject material. Learning can be hard and at times frustrating. Teachers should be the people that are your cheerleaders, in your corner, helping you through the rough spots. If you find someone that isn't kind or encouraging, you are not going to learn. We need healthy encouraging teachers. Too many people use punishments or consequences to negatively motivate students. That is harmful. Avoid those kinds of educators.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is working for you? What isn't working for you? How/where do you feel like you get stuck? What can we as teachers do to help you? What can you as a student do to help yourself? We are a team.  We are in this together.
