About Katie

Hi! My name is Katie B. I've been a teacher for twenty-two years and currently teach 4th grade. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education and a Master's Degree in Reading Education. I'm also a mom to two daughters, ages five and fourteen.

My true passion is teaching children how to read, and how to learn from reading. I was a reading specialist for a few years and thoroughly enjoyed my Graduate classes that specialized in the Orton-Gillingham method. I feel those classes truly helped my ability to successfully teach my students to decode and read. I also love teaching various comprehension and writing strategies to upper elementary students. I love to try to find games and songs to make learning fun for my students.

Additionally, I am certified to teach math. I love to incorporate games into my math lessons to help students find math more enjoyable. I focus on teaching multiple strategies so different learning styles are met for individual learners. I make sure to keep open communication with my students' caregivers about the new methods of teaching math so that they feel more confident in helping their children. I truly love to teach and love helping students feel more confident and successful.

I've also been an elementary tutor for four years. I tutor students with math, reading, and writing strategies. I love working one-on-one with students, or with small groups because it truly allows me to learn more about my students' learning styles. I tailor my instruction to match their style and personalities. During my lessons, I demonstrate examples while also allowing for individual practice with my feedback. I welcome open communication from the caregivers and hope to work together as a team to best meet the needs of the students.
