About Kate

When necessary, I like to connect with my students by learning their interests and then incorporating it into the problems. For example, I previously worked closely with a student who had difficulty focusing. I found out they loved Pokemon, so I incorporated that into their math problems and a switch just flipped in their head! They solved it swiftly and became more engaged with the homework presented.

This is an effective trick to keep students focused, engaged, and to recognize the relevance by connecting it to the real world.

I have always had a passion for teaching and working with students since I was in high school. I find it rewarding, exciting, and always a new experience! What I love most about the work is seeing the lightbulb go off in the student's brain and them discovering their newfound enjoyment for the subject. I believe all students have the ability to excel academically. They just need a little guidance and encouragement!

In high school, I was a member of a tutoring club for the local middle schools. I was also a Teacher Aide at an elementary school.

During college, I discovered my passion for teaching, mentoring, and guidance work through various sociology and applied psychology. Then I applied to become a teacher abroad as an ESL teacher, which solidified my passion/interest in teaching.

I have over one year of professional teaching experience abroad in ESL at two middle schools and three elementary schools. I have conducted classes on my own including preparing/presenting worksheets, presentations, and activities.

I also have professional tutoring experience in K-12 math and work with a diverse group of students daily.

About the lesson

I like to get to know the student by learning about and gauging their level of knowledge in the subject in order to effectively provide the proper tutoring they need. I try to pinpoint their weaknesses, strengths, and the level where they want to be at. It's also important to establish what the student's goals are so we can be on the same page and I can help them achieve it.

I have mainly worked with students from kindergarten up to middle school in 8th grade. I have experience working with students with ADHD, students who are uninterested in the subject, and quiet students.
