When working with a new student, I typically like to discuss their needs beforehand with their caretaker. I will then ask the student what they believe their needs are, and determine a consensus. Finally, I will ask to see a sample of the student's recent and/or current work in their area of growth, and set a path forward from there.
I have taught classrooms of PreK, Kindergarten/First grade, fourth grade, and sixth/seventh grade students. I have tutored students in elementary school, middle school, high school, and community college. In the early grades I focused on phonics. In the middle and high school grades I mostly focused on math and writing. Finally, I have tutored community college students in general mathematics.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider their academic/educational goals and what they believe to be the most adverse obstacle to those goals. They should also be open to what the teacher feels is hindering them, and be able to collaborate to set specific, incremental goals.
