About Dalila
I focus on helping students build their own skills to understand the material and approach problems. I present the material little by little, building on their previous knowledge in a way that's intuitive for the student. To do this, I use examples and questions that students and I will solve together. I have found this is a great way to make the student truly engage with and understand the material. Everyone's brains work in different ways, and my experience allows me to figure out which way of presenting the material will make it click for each particular student.
Math can be a source of anxiety and frustration for many people. In my experience, this usually comes from a bad early experience that left them with a shaky foundation, making everything since then harder to learn. I'm patient and understanding with my students, and when we have the time, I go back to rebuild that foundation so they can actually understand math rather than memorizing whatever they need for the next test. The best feeling I get from teaching is seeing someone who thought they were bad at math their whole life start to like math because it finally makes sense to them.
If we meet on a regular basis, I'll make sure we develop a strong foundation so that you can keep learning more easily and effectively.
If you're preparing for an exam, I'll make sure you build the best problem-solving skills for approaching any question.
I hava a degree in mechanical engineering from MIT. I did private tutoring for two years during a gap in college, 2020 to 2022. I worked with students from middle school to college on Math, Physics and SAT and ACT prep. During this time I obtained a tutoring certificate from the National Tutoring Association. I also worked at a Mathnasium for six months in 2021. I really liked their approach to tutoring and I incorporate a lot of their philosophies into my teaching style.
At MIT I was a Physics 1 - Classical Mechanics Teaching Assistant during Summer and Fall 2023. I supported in class problem solving sessions, held recitations and did office hours where I worked 1 on 1 with students.

Beforehand I like to ask to see some of the material they want to work on so I can get an idea of what we need to do and I can start getting prepared.
On the first session I quickly ask some questions to get to know a bit more about them and their learning style. For example, what is their favorite subject and what activities they do after school. I then ask how they are doing in the subject and how are they feeling about the topic that we are going to work on.
I assess their knowledge by asking some basic questions about the topic and seeing their response. If I see that they kind of know it but are a little confused about it I'll try to do some examples and then ask some questions starting from more simple and adding complexity so they can build their understanding.
For the next sessions I'll prepare some problems beforehand for us to solve together depending on where they are and what their goal is. If they are preparing for an exam I will focus on the type of problems they'll probably get on the exam. If we're looking at long term tutoring for building better understanding I'll develop a rough plan of topics I want to cover over the following sessions which we will adapt depending on how the student progresses. In this case we might also want to review some previous topics that the student might have gaps in.
