About Emily

I am a recent Northwestern University graduate tutoring in for extra money while I apply to graduate school. I majored in Psychology and took a wide range of subjects, graduated with honors. I am great with all kinds of personalities and want to help make learning and homework fun!

Helping students learn more easily and understand how they learn is my favorite part of teaching. There are so many smart people who never had someone invest in their interests and focuses, and so they never learned to enjoy school. It is great to feel like giving different students the space and time to discover how they learn and grow can change how they walk through the rest of their lives.

I was a geometry teaching assistant in high school and have lead many training sessions in various groups (including student groups in college and colleague groups in my corporate job).

I'm sure that I have less formal training in tutoring than many tutors, and for some students that will not be a good fit, but I was always a great student, was recently a student, so I understand the stresses, and work well with all different personality types.

About the lesson

I think it's incredibly important to get to know the student and the family. I like to spend the first session talking with the student and parents about goals and what they are specifically looking for in tutoring. Then I like to spend time witht he student to hear more about how they learn and where they find different classes to be hard.

After that, I work with the student to create a plan that makes sense for them and that they feel good about. Co-created a working plan helps engage the student and make our time more fruitful. Examples of different plans include deciding how to divide up our time together, how to determine what to focus on during tutoring, ways the student can improve learning in the classroom, and so on.

Find someone who you want to be working with! There are tons of people who are smart and qualified in every area. If you find someone who communicates and works in a way that motivates and excites you, that is how you're going to learn best, and I believe that mostly has to do with personality!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Of course this question depends a bit on the age of the student, but I think it is incredibly important to think about "how can I help my teacher meet my needs?" This is a vague start, but what I mean is, what can you bring to that conversation to help you succeed? If you are feeling like your teacher isn't giving you enough 1 on 1 time, can you help them improve that by coming in after school for help or staying five minutes after class or keeping a list of your ongoing questions during class? I think it is important to think about this for two reasons. The first is the more obvious; it will make it more likely that your teacher meets your needs. The second is that it will help you determine what is within your control and what is not. If you realize that writing your questions down helps because you can look them up on youtube or with your parents, then you have more freedom to do some of that learning in a different environment. If you realize you really do need more 1 on 1 time, you then know that you need to seek their help more or hire a tutor or find an alternative solution.

Truthfully, though, many students need to think about different questions depending on their disposition. The most important advice I can give for students and their parents is try to identify the source of the problem in learning (is it in the learning itself, the relationship with the teacher, the classroom environemtn) and the needs will follow!
