About Schontal
My teaching career began 25 years ago. My son struggled through school from the beginning and continued to do so throughout his years. As parents, his father and I wanted to get help for him but no one provided us with the assistance we needed. In the meantime, I began taking classes to help me get a better understanding of the learning process. Understanding the complexities of the mind became so intriguing to me that I ended up compiling degrees and certifications while focusing on one main goal – helping my son become a better learner. As my son moved on to middle school, so did I. The process continued until he begged me not to follow him to college. Consequently, I began my collegiate experience locally.
I have over twenty years’ experience in the field of education, ranging from Kindergarten through the collegiate level. This includes positions as an ESL Coordinator working abroad, Teacher Mentor, Tutorial Coordinator, Instructional Lead Teacher and Parent Engagement Specialist for the past five years. By trade I am a teacher leader, curriculum designer and Content Area Specialist. More specifically, my favored subjects are reading, writing, ELA and Math. I have a bachelor’s degree in Education, a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision, and completed coursework towards my Ph.D. in Educational Leadership with a Specialization in Curriculum and Instruction. I also have over 10 years’ experience working with community group homes transitioning students into the military, colleges and universities throughout the world. Please note that my work at the collegiate level with the GED, SAT, ASVAB, recruiters, alternative schools and credit recovery have contributed to my uncanny ability to use student data to identify deficits and determine a suitable course of action.

Clients are either given a battery of assessments or one assessment in a specific content area, depending on the current needs of the student. A student plan is then created based on individual student goals. The final phase of the process is to develop a regular weekly schedule for the student complete with periodic benchmarks. Student progress is monitored on a regular basis.
I have certifications and work experience at the elementary, middle, high school and collegiate level. The support I have provided for students throughout the community for the past 15 years, my collegiate and high school teaching experience in the U.S. and abroad, and my experience working with all levels of K-12 are great attributes.
Make sure the tutor you choose has a passion for teaching and takes the time to get know you. A non-supportive tutor who lacks a passion for teaching is worse than not having a tutor.
I am fond of the overwhelming number of students who have contacted me for college and university references over the past few months. The messages have brought me to tears on several occasions. Many of the students never thought they would pass their classes, yet now they are receiving offers from major universities!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students need to make sure they have clear goals and understand what they need to do to ensure they accomplish those goals. If the student does not know what course of action to take, it's okay. The non-negotiable is that the student be willing to follow the tutor’s instructions to achieve their goal, regardless of the difficulty they encounter.
