Purely through happenstance, I would typically start helping people after speaking with friends and coworkers and would offer my services after hearing that they were having trouble with a given subject.

I'm a high school graduate that has previous amateur algebra tutoring experience.

I've assisted friends and family tens of times both at meeting places and over the phone.

About the lesson

1. Introductions.

2. Ask questions regarding your learning style

3. Ask what subjects you'd like to focus on or improve.

4. Write up a simplified version of the said subject(s)/problem(s) and provide the tools necessary to solve similar problems moving forward.

5. Congratulate and celebrate your success!

I've assisted family, friends, and coworkers prepare for various assignments ranging from helping my 5-year-old niece with basic arithmetic to helping my 40-year-old manager at the time with their algebra refresher course.

My advice would be to make sure that the teacher can simplify everything. Not just equations, but explanations as well. I've found that if someone can effectively explain something in a manner that most can understand then they must have a deep understanding of the given subject. Of course, you should make sure that they can back up their explanation with a credible answer.
