About Joni

Hi my name is Joni High. I currently teach 5th grade mathematics. Math is one of those subjects that is tough for a lot of kiddos. I believe using hands on resources and showing kiddos how we use math in the real world helps them learn in a clear and fun way. I never knew why as a child I just memorized the rules. Showing kiddos why makes it easier to remember concepts and use them in the future.

I have always loved math. Being a math teacher I see how kids either love or hate math. I try to give them strategies and reasoning that will help them succeed and see how important math is. Instead of teaching one strategy, I give my students multiple ways of solving a problem and let them use hands on materials to see the why and how. I feel my students have been very successful in the past years and may even like math a bit more. You have to make math fun and enjoyable to learn.

From the time I was in Kindergarten I knew I wanted to be a teacher. Straight out of high school I continued on with my education to get my Bachelor's in Education.

I currently have an Arizona Teaching Certificate grades 1-8. I received my Bachelor's of Education from ASU in 2001. I have taught 6th, 7th, 8th, and currently 5th grade.

About the lesson

When I meet a new student the first thing I do is get to know the kiddo and find out what their hobbies or interests are. Then it is important to know how they feel about math. I also need to know if the student is a hands on, pictorial, or paper learner. During our first session I want to find out what the student struggles with. Making sure each kiddo has the basic math facts in their knowledge bank will make it easier going forward to know where to start.

I have worked with many different types of students in the past. I have had shy, autistic, outgoing, and kiddos who are very low in math. I feel no matter the child there is always a way to reach them and help them learn.

Make sure your tutor loves what he/she does. You tutor has to have passion and commitment in making you successful.

Each year I start off letting the students know how important it is to know their multiplication facts. Even though it is a 3rd grade standard there are many kiddos that still struggle learning all of them. Each Thursday I give my students a 5 minute multiplication test consisting of 100 problems. Once they get 100 correct I buy them a full size candy bar and they get to put their football in the touchdown zone on the bulletin board.

I had one kiddo that really struggled but they never gave up. It took this particular student all year to reach 100 but he finally got it. The sheer joy and accoplishment he felt made me overjoyed. He later thanked me and said thank you for helping me learn my facts.
