About Lia
Hi! My name is Lia and I am currently a junior in high school in New York City. I have a lot of experience working with younger kids – from tutoring to counseling at summer camp to babysitting – and I enoy hanging out and teaching them very much.
I love most parts of tutoring, but I think my favorite part is probably getting to know the kids. I really miss doing so in person, but even online I think that joking around about a math problem to increase undertsanding or talking about their lives in connection with a short story can be both fascinating and informative for me as well as for them.
I started teaching when I realized how much fun I was having with the children I was working with during the summer. I missed the kids who I would see daily each summer, and although I was hesitant at first I also noticed that tutoring requires a lot of the same skills.
I am a junior in high school so I have not had much professional training, but from my past experience tutoring to the tutoring classes I have attended in the not so recent past, I believe I am more than qualified. I have developed a unique approach because of my foundation as a childcare worker (not a teacher), and my knowledge of tutoring services have allowed me to see where tutors often fall a bit short. This has allowed me to hone my tutoring skills in a way in which others often are unable to, and it has opened my eyes to a type of tutoring which is not only work, but also fun.

Usually, I take the first one or two meetings to understand what a student wants to learn from the tutoring experience and how they learn. I also ask for them to bring a few homework questions or other problems with which they struggle, and then we begin to cover the individualized material as our sessions continue.
I have worked mainly with students in grades three, four, and five, but I am more than willing to work with children enrolled in younger grades as well.
