About Scott
I have a Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience/Biopsychology, as well as a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. I have taught and tutored students in many capacities over the past 20 years. My teaching experience includes undergraduate university courses in psychology, neuroscience, neurobiology laboratory, and statistics. My tutoring experience includes working with graduate, undergraduate, secondary, and primary students in subjects such as chemistry, biology, physics, arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, statistics, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus. I have experience working with special needs students, including those with ADHD, social anxiety, and autism, as well as working with gifted students. I also assist my wife in teaching our sons math, science, reading, and related subjects within a homeschool environment.
My personal teaching/tutoring philosophy is focused on the following objectives: (1) engaging the student in active participation in learning (i.e. taking ownership), (2) inspiring student interest through enthusiastic presentation, (3) using practical, real-world examples to bring relevance to material, and (4) creating an environment where students feel comfortable and empowered to participate. Instead of presenting the students with facts and formulas and pushing rote memorization, I prefer to employ more thoughtful and interactive teaching methods to promote a deeper understanding of the subjects that helps students retain a better understanding and appreciation for the material.
