About Justin

Hey! My name is Justin and I've been tutoring in math for about 5 years now. I graduated from the International Baccalaureate program at St. Petersburg High School and now currently study Applied Mathematics and Urban Studies at Brown University. I've worked at both the middle school and high school level, tutoring in subjects ranging from pre-algebra to AP Calculus. I am also comfortable tutoring in the math section of the SAT and ACT, having gone through the college application process recently I am familiar with helpful strategies to score highly on these tests.

I got started teaching as a student volunteer my freshman year of high school, going back to my local middle school to help in the Algebra 1 and Geometry classes. From here, I began coaching their competitive math team and taught an end of course prep class before beginning to transition to private tutoring.

I have been a tutor for nearly 5 years working both privately and as a volunteer in the public school system. While I have no formal teaching experience, I am the site leader for STEMS, a tutoring organization at Brown University which provides volunteer tutors to a local high school. This organization hosts tutoring meetings and workshops to ensure that the tutors are able to effectively communicate

About the lesson

Typiclly I begin by asking a few preliminary questions about what they are working on and try to quickly identfy what is giving the student trouble. I'll then go through and explain teh concept to them, working with example problems together and then by themselves as I facilitate to ensure their process is correct and that they are comfortable continuing the material on their own without my assistance.

I have worked with students from a variety of backgrounds and have limited experience working with students with ADHD.

I would want to make sure that the student is comfortable with the teacher. Hiring a tutor can be a stressful process for both the parents and students, so having a friendly face to look to is always beneficial.
