About Herve

I am a French-Belgian chemical engineer located in Providence. When tutoring, I try to capture the student's point of view. I don't look directly at the topic that has to be thought, instead I try to see what the student's perspective is and where the struggles might be in order to find a taylored explanation. One method DOES NOT fit all!

Noticing the progress a student is making, seeing them become more confortable in a certain topic, is a really fulfilling feeling.

I started teaching on facebook, mostly French (my native language). I would scroll down forums and correct people's mistakes, explain them the grammar while offering them the opportunity to learn more.

I have a master in chemical engineering and am currently working on my second master degree at Brown University. I have never been someone that "understood everything from the first time", but rather had to work hard to understand a topic. Therefore, I know how to tackle the certain confusion students might have when facing a new topic.

I like to have a chat with the student about the topic they have to study to understand in general how the student "works": do they prefer to read the material first on their own/at their own pace, do they rather get introduced to the subject, etc. I then ask them what they think the topic captures, what they like (or do not like about it), why they think it is relevant to their academic path and finally I try to give them concrete applications of the subject. When possible, I like to keep a "real life" case study in parallel, which often helps the student keep track of what is happening.

I have worked with a wide range of age groups! From middleschoolers to seniors.

Don't hesitate! I know it can be daunting to ask someone for help. But from my experience, the longer one waits, the harder it gets and the more regret you will have to not have asked for help sooner! The hardest step is the first one: recognizing you need help and asking for it. From then on it only gets easier. Education is key, and lucikly you are not alone to get through it!

One of my favorite recent events was when I helped a senior person write a romantic letter for his wife in her native language. It was really satisfying and fulfilling!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think it is important for one to know what they don't understand in a topic. Saying "I don't get this" won't help yourself and will frustrate your teacher. Explaining what you don't understand about it makes it much more easier for a teacher to give the most suitable answer to you. But most importantly, DON'T overthink asking something! We are here to help, and no question is a bad question :)

I start with a first "introductory" session where I introduce myself and where the student and I mostly chat (about everything) and get to know each other. The goal of this session is to make sure the student feels confortable working with me, which I think is key to get the most out of a student/tutoring experience. Therefore, I never charge the first session. The pricing system depends on the lessons. I don't have a "standard pricing system", it more depends on what is expected from me, if it is only for one particular class or if several classes are to be covered, for how long etc. I don't see this as a business, but as an opportunity for me to help students get through their classes in the best possible conditions.
