About Neathie

My name is Neathie Patel. I have earned a Bachlors of Science in Neuroscience with a minor in Psychology, a Masters of Arts of Biomedical sciences, and a doctrate in podiatric medicine. In addition to having taken a plethora of math and science courses in order to develop a profiecency in the topics, I have also taken the SAT, ACT, MCAT and GRE and would be happy to help students prepare for those exams and guide them through undergraduate, graduate and medical (MD, DO, DPM) admissions processes. I have been a tutor since highschool during which time I helped underclassmen with science and mathematics and continued casually tutoring underclassmen through medical school. I understand that some topics are difficult to understand and as a student, I can offer techniques to learn that can help students as they continue through increasingly difficult material. I think tutoring is all about the dialoge between tutor and tutee. I often like to approach sessions as if we are working together and to focus on what the student is weak on. I believe in learning via discussion and helping to create a logic that weill help students work through problems.

Community has been a strong part of my life and I have always tried to give back. In my second year of high school, I could see that underdclassmen needed help and that I had the ability to help. As a result, I began to tutor them and later help establish a tutoring program at the school as a means of giving back to the community and helping create stronger community members.

I have a Bachelors of Science in Neuroscience with a minor in psychology and a Masters of Arts in Biomedical Sciences. I have unprofessionally tutrored through a tutoring program in highschool as well as in undergrad. I have professionally tutuored through Edgewood highschool in Bloomington Indiana.

About the lesson

When meeting a new student, I typically like to understand what has been working for them and their learning style as well as interests and hobbies that we can use to make material relatable. After that is established, I try to work with the student to establish what is difficult for them and explain it and think through it together. Finally, I try to reinforce the information and increase the students confidence by asking questions that the student can work through, and if they do not understand it or get stuck on a particular part, I like to review it.

I have worked with all kinds of students including international students. The most important thing I have learned from them as well as from my educational journey is that each person learns differently and finding the correct learning style may take some trial and error, but once that style is pinpointed, it will make a massive difference further down the line.

When you are looking for a tutor, you need to search for someone who will connect with you. Ultimately, a tutor student relationship should be one where both people are able to work together and understand each other in order to pursue a common goal of greater knowledge.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What do I not understand? This is the hardest question.

2. Can I explain what I understand? One of the easiest ways to do this is to put away the material and explain it out loud. If you have to look back to explain it, then you need to review it, or you don't understand it.

3. How do I learn? Do I understand something if I see it? Do I need to hear it? Do I need to write it down?

4. Is there a teacher who taught me something and it jsut clicked? What did they do differently? Was it the subject or the teacher?

5. Why am I having trouble? Can I not focus on the topic at hand? Do I not have the building blocks down?

6. What can this teacher do the most to help me? When do I need them? Right before a test? Once a week to augment material? Do I want them to give me practice questions? Explain material? Both. Do I want them to provide me with resources like youtube videos?
