About Albert

I really enjoy sharing and teaching music to other people! It is a wonderful way to connect with others and build strong long-lasting relationships.

Currently Enrolled at the Cleveland Institute of Music where I study with the Cleveland Orchestra's Principal Percussionist and Principal Timpanist.

Performed with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Philharmonic, and the National Orchestra Institutes 2019 Summer Festival Orchestra

Seeing students making progress and more specifically, seeing students get excited about their progress is always exciting. From a teaching standpoint, being able play a positive role in a students development and seeing them blossom as a result of their hard work is an incredibly thrilling experience!

Quite casually. I would go back to visit my middle and high school band programs when I had time off from school/work.  I typically went to just watch the students rehearse but I would almost always end up getting involved somehow... tweaking things here and there, tossing out small bits of advice.

I am currently pursuing a BM in Orchestral Timpani/Percussion at the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) in Cleveland, Ohio, studying with the Cleveland Orchestra's Principal Percussionist (Marc Damoulakis) and Principal Timpanist (Paul Yancich).  During my time at CIM I have also studied with former Principal Percussionist of the Cleveland Orchestra, Richard Weiner, who no longer teaches at CIM.

In High School, I participated in the Hawaii Youth Symphony Program (YSI), various events hosted by the Oahu Band Directors Association (Select Band, Marching Band, etc.), as well as Interlochen's 2016 Summer Arts Camp World Youth Symphony Orchestra.  I was chosen as the principal percussionist for every one of these ensembles every time they held auditions.

Professionally, I have played percussion with the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, the University of Hawaii Saxophone Choir, the Cleveland Philharmonic, and the National Orchestral Institutes 2019 Summer Festival Orchestra.

Also, as a side note, I was selected as the runner-up/first alternate for the National Repertory Orchestra's 2020 summer season (Principal Timpani).

It depends how skilled the student is.  Whether they are just getting started or have already been playing for a while, my own musical experiences have allowed me to easily adopt teaching methods that best fit the students idiosyncracies.

Worked with plenty.  Shy, chatty, serious; so long as you find a way to present yourself to the student in a way that shows you understand and are willing to help with their needs and meta-needs, their interest in what you are teaching them and your relationship with them will maintain itself and even grow.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Don't overthink it - just ask!  There are no right or wrong questions to be asked so long as it relates to the subject at hand.  It's easy to forget that there is tremendous utility in not knowing much about something, because that means you have so much more to be curious about!
