About Michael
I offer lessons in music theory, ear training and basic/intermediate keyboard skills. I call my method the "Music Theory Pocket Knife" because I want my students to have this knowledge on them and ready at all times. My goal is to teach useful and practical skills that will help performers, writers, and producers to make the best music they can make! These skills will help when coming up with chord progressions, melodies, harmonies, and creating charts with the Nashville number system (which I can also show you). I’ll always try to find examples and teach lessons based on the students needs and goals for their musical careers!
What I enjoy most about giving music theory/ear training lessons is knowing that I'm helping people grow in doing what they love. Music theory has so many terms and little things about it that can be confusing, and it brings me so much joy to see someone finally understand something that had confused them for so long.
I taught in college through student employment and I loved it. I loved finding different ways to help make the lessons click for my students. Fast-foward to now, I'm living in Nashville, TN and I've played in multiple bands where the players/singers don't know a lick of theory. I figured extending my skills and knowledge to those who want to learn would be a good way to get back into teaching.
I have a bachelor's degree from Berklee College of Music, where I also tutored students (through student empolyment) in all of the core music classes. I had 5-6 weekly students as well as walk-in students.

My first step is to ask a student what their goals are and to find out what they know already. Once I find out what the student is trying to improve on, I start tailoring the lessons to involve the skills they are needing instruction on. I am a believer in strong funfamentals, so we do go over those (scales, keys, intervals, etc.) but once those are solidified we jump into the meat of the lessons.
I've worked with all types of students. Drummers, singers, guitarists, keyboardists, etc. Some of my tutoring students needed a lot of help on certain subjects, and some only needed a little, but no matter what I was always trying to be creative in my approach to meeting each individual student's needs.
My advice would be to make sure they can help you meet your goals. I had a lot of teachers in college who only wanted to teach me what they wanted me to learn, and I didn't end up learning much from them. The teachers who understood what I wanted out of lessons knew how to tailor their lesson time to meet my needs, and I learned a lot more from them.
Recently, I've been teaching a guitarist, and one lesson I thaught him about secondary dominants. The next lesson I had with him, he had really done his homework and had learned each one and where they fell in the scale. I was very happy to have taught him a subject that he then worked on and fully understood.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should think about short-term and long-term goals. Short-term would be something like, "What are some practical skills I can get better at right now?" Long-term would be something like, "How can I build a stronger foundation of knowledge that will help me years down the road?" They should also think about the time commitment it takes to learn a craft, especially one so specific as music. You can fake it through a lot of gigs, but to truly understand how the mechanics of music works takes a lot of time and practice. They need to think about if it is something they want to work on not only in the lesson, but on their own time as well.

Mike has it all. Not only is he a great teacher and communicator, he's a talented composer and player as well! He can improve your musical understanding and proficiency no matter what level you're at. I would recommend him to anyone!
