About Jennifer
I am a former CT certified teacher. I moved here ten years ago for a teaching job but decided not to pursue classroom teaching after that school year.
I've always enjoyed working one on one and seeing how students progress. I employ specific behavior techniques that have proved effective with students who tend to be over-active or easily distracted. My calm, reassuring voice combined with clear instructional messages helps keep these students focused and on task.
I love working one on one and building teacher-student relationships. My ability to relate easily to children enables me to adapt instruction to their individual learning styles. I am also patient and compassionate.
I have always loved working with kids since I was a teenager where I taught a girl how to swim. This experience prompted me to want to be a teacher. I also had great elementary school teachers which also contributed.
I have a Master's Degree in Elementary Education. My experience includues classroom teaching subsitute teaching, and tutoring(privately and at Sylvan Learning Center).

The typical process is having an initial phone call to determine student needs and learning style. Depending on the conversation, I think both the parties can determined whether my teaching style would be a good fit or not.
I have worked mostly with K-2 students focusing on developing beginning reading skills and those who are underachieving or have special needs. In addition, I have tutored students who needed homework support during the academic year.
My advice is to make sure that the teacher understands your needs and has the necessary experience to develop them. I like to compare it to trying on shoes. If the shoe doesn't fit, try another pair on.
There are so many good tutors out there. Shop around and see who you like best. Perhaps, try a lesson with the top two and decide which ones the better fit.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Having a good understand of what you need help with as well as how you learn best.
If you have examples of assignments which were a struggle, great conversation starter to have with the prospective teacher. What would there teaching approach be?
