About Leah
I have a B.S. and M.A. in Elementary Education and Special Education.
I taught in Kentucky and Tennessee public schools for 34 years.
All of my experience is with elementary age children with 32 years teaching children with learning difficulties. I was successful in teaching all my students to read and/or improve their reading skills. I also did private tutoring for children who had not been successful with their previous instruction.
My primary method is phonics based. I strongly feel this is the best way for children to read independently. They learn to attack new words by learning that sounds are associated with printed letters. They then learn to blend these sounds to form words, and transition to reading those words quickly in order to read sentences and passages.
Word recognition alone does not ensure success. Therefore, I implement strategies to ensure the student understands the meaning of written words.
I always wanted to be a teacher even as a small child I pretended to "teach" my dolls and young cousins. In high school I volunteered as a tutor for elementary children with dyslexia. I went on to college to get the proper training and certification for teaching.
I have a B.S. (Bachelor of Science) and M.A. in Ed (Masters in Education).
I have had 34 years teaching experience with a minimum of 24 hours of professional development yearly.

The first thing is the assess the student's current knowledge and skills. I will use the results of these assessments to determine what skills are necessary to be successful. This will be our baseline for beginning instruction.
I use an online platform such as FaceTime, Skype or Zoom to interact with the student on an individual basis unless otherwise requested.
Elementary grades Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Students were of varied abiities: intellectually gifted, average and significally below same aged peers.
Some of my students also had other learning difficulties such as hyperactivity, hearing loss, emotional and behavioral problems.

$60 per hour or $1 per minute
My experience has taught me that not all children can stay on task for one hour continuously. If the student isn't able to stay focused for 60 minutes the fee will be reduced one dollar per minute under the hour. ($50=50 minutes, $30=30 minutes, etc.). Basically, it is one dollar per minute.
