About Sharon
Whether you are wanting to learn to defend yourself, Kickbox, Box or learn traditional Karate for the first time or you are experienced and want to learn more advanced techniques we can help you advance and grow for competition or for personal safety. Our knowledgeable instructors teach children and adults. Do you desire to learn real ways to defend yourself that are practical and proven by military/police tactics in real world situations? I like seeing the lightbulbs go on as a student figures something out. It's great to hear about kids learning confidence, gaining more focus in school, or adults reach their fitness goals and gain confidence in their ability to defend themselves.

We start where you are. I will evaluate where you are in terms of coordination and fitness and build a training plan that coordinates with your your unique interests and desires to learn.
We work with students as young as 3 and have worked with students in their 70s and everything in between, including amateur golden glove fighters, PKC kickboxers, National level Karate champions, troubled youth, military, ADHD, autism, developmental delay, handicap, etc.
When looking for a school, I tend to look more at what instructor will you be working with. Many schools in a strip mall are trying to pay a large monthly rent and have to process a large amount of students and will often promote up ranks to gain additional rank testing fees just to maintain rent. This school costs are $100 to $145 a month plus testing feees and equipment markups of 200%. Unfortunately, the individual student can get lost in the shuffle or invariably be stuck working with a contrived plan of lessons with inexperienced instructors teaching extremely expensive lessons all for the sake of having a nice building in a decent location.
They often have a preplanned schedule of lessons that vary little despite the needs of the class in order for young or inexperienced instructors to be competent to teach class. This often ends with students stuck in three year contracts and boring material taught by junior ranks. The flip side is that you can get a very experienced Martial Artist who doesn’t know how to teach, or build rapport with his student and can be overly harsh and demanding leading to a quick burn out and frustration.
An experienced instructor can formulate his own lessons according to the needs of the students present in class that day and do so in a way that truly builds a strong foundation in the each student in terms of foot work, striking techniques, character development, and the physical fitness level. Likewise, they aren’t ego based but authentic in their character and abilities. That instructor will build an authentic rapport and classes should be happy and drama free. Yet, at the same time they will test you and not promote you every couple months just because. The dojo should be a happy culture of hard work, grit, smiles, courage, and a family atmosphere.
