About Grace

Learning a new craft is so much more than just that. Learning new crafts is about acquiring skills and building confidence so we can find joy within our lives and selves. I love teaching handweaving so you can make your own cloth, hand spinning to make your own yarn, and basic sewing skills so you can make to your heart's content!

My goal is to make the learning process enjoyable by removing typical barriers. We work at the student's pace on a project of the student's choice.

I have been teaching beginning handweaving for a few years and have taught for organizations such as the Carolina Fiber Fest. I teach handweaving on an inkle loom, floor loom or rigid heddle loom. I can teach handspinning for beginners as well as intermediate to take youbeyond a basic 2-ply yarns.

I began teaching over a decade ago. I teach Ukrainian Easter Eggs, and still teach those seasonal classes. I fell in love with teaching then, but never imagined I would switch to teaching in the fiber arts. Teaching fiber arts has been a remarkably rewarding endeavor as I watch my former students move beyond their initial percoeved limitations. They first thought their limits would keep them tethered, and I find inspiration as I watch them remove those limits, one by one.

I am mostly self-taught as a handspinner. My weaving instructor (and mentor still) is Jean Vollrath who teaches the more advanced weaving courses through my studio. I am also a hand knitter and sewist who learned through projects and learning by mistakes and overcomming challenges. I do my bestto impart thoselessons with my students so they learn easier and more efficiently.

About the lesson

I like to first get to know prospective students by find8ng out some of their fiber arts history. I also like to find out what equipment they already own and how comfortable they are with using that equipment. Then, I find out what their goals and needs are before setting up a student-centered learning plan. This can be done in person, over the phone, or virtually. Once these goals are established, can get busy with learning!

I primarily focus on adult learners currently, though I have also taught youth classes, as well. I aspire to teach all age ranges and developmental stages. I especially enjoy teaching teens and young adults.

Always research your instructors! My philosophy is the student should direct the projection of the learning, not the instructor. Find the teacher whose philosophy is aligned with your own, whether that philosophy is what materials are used, how the learning is conducted, or what teaching methods are used. Find someone who can adequately maneuver within the various learning styles so you can be confident they can accommodate your own learning style.

Like most fiber artists, I enjoy fiber festivals! I recently taight inkle loom weaving and intermediate hand spinning for Carolina Fiber Fest and look forward to teaching for other fiber festivals across the country!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think through what your end goals actually are. I have had students who simply wanted to weave blankets for loved ones and once completed moved on to other endeavors, while other students had a broad "I want to weave" goal. Allow yourself to explore in the fiber arts, because it is a vibrant community full of life-long passionate learners and educators. You may end up in a craft you never imag8ned you would enjoy, but it is a beautiful process worth losing yourself within.

Details

Pricing is available on my website. Handspinners can setup an individual lesson at $30 per hour rate and can be as short as thirty minutes if you just need a little help for small corrections. Learn to Weave on a floor loom is $150 and takes one lesson per week (up to 2 hour sessions) for 6 to 8 weeks, dependent onthe student's learning pace. Sewing lessons are independent classes listed on my website.
