About Karen

I have been sewing on and off for about 45 years now. I sewed my own wedding dress, and recently used that experience to make pillbox bride's and bridesmaids' hats. I have done historical sewing for my family, including a Seminole patchwork jacket (look it up; the work that can go into them is amazing!) I enjoy showing other people all the possibilities there are in learning to sew for yourself.

I'm a homeschool mom - everything involves teaching!

Made my own wedding dress which included dealing with satin silk, puffy sleeves ending in points, boned corset, bridal buttons, lace, and lining.

About the lesson

The first step is to find out what the student already knows! As a homeschool mom, I am used to working with all different levels of understanding.

Mostly children

Look for someone who knows how to do a very careful job of it, but who also knows some seams are hidden and for those you don't have to worry about being perfect!

A neighbor needed bridal millinery (hat-making) done. I had never done such a thing, but looked it up in books and on the Internet, and decided it didn't look too bad. And in fact, it wasn't; it was great fun seeing something as special as a bridal hat taking shape and ending up looking like something you would find in a high-end store! Need a bridal pillbox hat? I could show you how to hand-sew one in just a few hours!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
In some ways you could say sewing makes no economic sense to do for yourself anymore. In other ways you could say it saves huge amounts of money. Make sure you know what benefits you expect from learning to sew before you start, so you don't develop this new skill and then wonder what for.
