About Vishal

I combine technical voice training with style coaching so that you walk away feeling confident, grounded, and encouraged to explore your unique voice in the healthiest way possible.

My 15 years of performing experience and 5 years of teaching has given me an insight into the psyche of the singer. I love helping singers gain confidence, skills, and deeper artistry through the multilayered work we do together. And I love teaching because it forces me the keep learning.

I started teaching because I was asked to. I started a “series” on Instagram called “#Rifftober” that showcased my appreciation for riffs. Someone came to me because they wanted help with their pop sound and had seen my videos. Then another came to me to help them prepare for a role in a musical. Mostly through word of mouth, I started getting more and more students. I realized early on that in order to start teaching, I couldn’t stop learning. It’s been rewarding, and I love it.

I studied Musical Theater at American University in Washington, DC, working under Doug Bowles and Robert Petillo. I have spent the last 15 years as a professional singer, performing in concerts and musicals. In 2017 I made my broadway debut in GROUNDHOG DAY the musical, playing Larry the camera man. As a voice coach, I have 5 years of experience working with professional and newer singers. Last year I was featured in the book “Rock The Audition”, Sheri Sanders’ go to guide for navigating different music styles as a singer. I came on board as the Riff Coach for Rock The Audition, and I am currently completing a voice teacher training through New York Vocal Coaching.

About the lesson

I know that hiring a voice teacher can be scary, so I like to talk to my prospective students. We have a 15 minute consult before beginning lessons so I can learn more about you, your goals, experience, and what you are looking for out of a teacher.

Throughout our lessons we work together to unlock your voice. My approach is a mixture of technical work, style work, and broader artistic reflection.

I have worked with a variety of age groups and skill levels. Currently, my youngest student is 8 years old and I work with professional musical theater and pop singers as well.

I would encourage you to think about the reasons you want to take voice lessons. On the surface it’s about gaining more skill, being able to sing more challenging material, and singing with ease. But deeper than that is your confidence and the ability to dig into the work and interpret it as an artist. Find someone who makes you feel safe, because on the road to vocal power and freedom is messy, full of cracking and frustration and honest communication.

Voice lessons are about slow growth, developing good habits that pay off later on. Occasionally, a student will have a breakthrough and feel like all the work they’ve been doing is paying off. I had a student earlier this year who is navigating a changing voice, and he was having problems with breathing in a song. We tried so many different technical exercises and finally, the day before he had to perform the song, we did a completely different type of exercise that clicked. His breathing became easier to control and he was so thrilled!

Details

I have three different offerings for students:

Voice Lessons ($75/hr) - These lessons focus on the long-term goals of the singer, developing technique, navigating style, and focusing on vocal health and freedom.

Riff Coaching ($75/hr) - These lessons are usually specific to auditions or performances and are mostly focused on pop style. We work on singing with flexibility, agility, and ease, and using personal taste to put your unique voice into your work.

Young Student Lesson ($40/half hour) - An hour long lesson can be a lot for younger children! This miniature version of a fuller lesson focuses on technique, games for kids to practice and have fun with singing, and working on their favorite music to apply what they're learning!
