Mostly by coaching friends in tournament play. I seem to have a knack of understanding strengths/flaws of each player at the table. With that understanding I am able to bring my player's strengths into the match as well as exploiting the opponent's weaknesses.

I have been personally coached by Boris Shafir (former head coach of the Russian National Team) for about 10 years. That world class experience in tandem with 40+ years of tournament play provides me a basis of understanding higher than most coaches.

About the lesson

First, determine long term goals of the student: Improve to beat friends, just get some exercise, aim for national title(s), etc. Second, determine the exact level the individual is at the present time. Provide an honest assessment of achieveing the goal. If the student is happy with the answer and happy with me, we go from there.

Once starting, it is imperative to determine strengths, weaknesses (areas for greatest improvement) and tendencies/inclinations in order to further develop a specific style of play. Grip is irrelevant and I have experience teaching shakehands, penhold and Seemiller (windshield wiper) style of play.

I was the Junior Coach at Maryland Tabble Tennis Association (and Howard County Table Tennis) in the early 2000s. Since then I have coached seniors at the YMCA in Westminster, MD. Both experiences were very positive and I raised the playing level and enjoyment of players as young as 6 and as old as 80. That coaching also led to successes for some students in Junior Olympics and Senior Olympics.

Stay away from "cookie cutter" coaches who coach every single student exactly the same way. They are merely trying to produce clones of themselves, but the same style does not necessarily fit each individual. Every individual should have a path to achieve their potential and the cookie cutter may produce some fantastic results, but it will leave many in the dust.

Helping good friend, Hall of Fame player Dave Sakai, eek out a victory from near certain defeat at the Meiklejohn Seniors in Laguna Hills, CA. Down 7-3 and only 4 points from elimination, I called time out. He looked dejected and was looking for specific instructions that might help him get back into the match. I told him to stay the course and stick to our original game plan, which was counterintuitive, as he was losing badly. But I explained that his opponent was merely in an extremely unusual hot streak and the time out was intended to break the momentum and turn the tide. There was no way his opponent could maintain that ferocity if we just took a moment to regroup. Taking advantage of the full minute time-out, Dave returned to the table and won the game 11-9, outscoring his opponent 8-2. He then won the 5th and eciding game convincingly.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The student should first think of their own, personal goals and then ask the coach what THEY look for in a student. If there is no connection between your own goals and what the coach envisions in student or what they "want" to deliver in coaching...you have no match. Look for someone else.
