About Lauren

I have been teaching violin and viola for nearly 30 years. I have played with many fine orchrestras and chamber groups in my career. I have a Bachelor's degree in music performance, and an additional degree in music education, as well as certification in Suzuki Teaching.

I use a student-centered approach to my teaching, that is, the student directs the pace of learning. I encourage eventual performance of some type that fits the student's preferred musical goal. For Suzuki, the parent attends the lessons, takes notes, and is very involved in the home practice.

As a Suzuki certified teacher, I teach very young students, often as young as 3 yrs old. However, I use the Suzuki approach with students of other ages as well. The difference being primarily the parent's participation in the learning process. When starting at 5 yrs or younger, I sometimes have the parent take lessons first, before the child begins.

Any style of playing, classical, fiddle, Irish, requires a basic foundation of violin hold, bow hold, and left hand technique. With all students, these are the skills we focus on first, and I start all students with emphasis on building these skills prior to reading and performing. I teach adults with the same emphasis of skill development working to achieve a good sound in any style, but of course, start reading much earlier.

Just that IF you are looking for Suzuki instruction, ask the teacher what level of certification he/she has and if they are an active SAA member (Suzuki Association of the Americas-the certifying organiztion for Suzuki)? Many teachers use the Suzuki books but have not had the Suzuki training. There is a difference.

I enjoy playing in local groups and in chamber groups.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Many teachers offer an introductory lesson for a minimal price. The beginning parent/student should look for a "good fit" for the student, someone who inspires the student. This can only be determined from a face-to-face.

For more advanced students, ask questions about affiliations, knowledge of conservatories/schools, amount of practice required (some high profile teachers ask for a minimum number of practice hours per week to achieve the goal). Also ask about former students, do they play in major orchestras?, are teachers?, studying at major music schools?
