I am available to travel to your home for private lessons within a reasonable distance.

Lessons can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on material to be covered, and attention span.

I have worked with children & adults with special needs.

I am a professional musician who can give instruction on many musical styles ranging from Classical to Folk Music from several different countries.

As a student, I was involved for many years as a violist with The Louisville Youth Orchestra, I became a graduate of the Youth Performing Arts School in Louisville, Ky. in 1981 majoring in music and theater. I have since performed in a a broad spectrum of musical involvements including touring with international folk dance troupes, performing Celtic and traditional music at events in several countries, composing music for, and directing several theatrical productions. At the same time I have been involved in educating children in music in several Community Schools throughout the Eastern U.S.. Between 2011 & 2019 I owned a full service music shop in Crestwood, Ky, where where I taught and operated a repair shop called 'Hewn from the Mountain Music''. I also perform in the viola section of the Louisville Philharmonia, and have served as as Public Relations Director on the Board of Directors.

My objective is to encourage enthusiasm and diligence in my students towards Music and the Performing Arts, focusing on self-esteem, presentation, and public performance. For strings, I incorporate sight reading with ear training using various acclaimed methods modeled after the Suzuki method, which I am in the process of obtaining certification. I value the importance of ensemble playing, and will orchestrate many such activities.

I taught over 112 students between 1987 and 2004 for a community school in Northern Vermont, and have been teaching ever since. Between 2011 and 2019, I owned a music shop where I taught and managed other teachers.

Even though my education was formal through high school, and into college, most of what I know is borne out of experience.
I have taught music consistently for over 30 years to all ages and levels.
I enjoy working with students with special needs.

About the lesson

First, I want to know why they desire to play this instrument , and what their goals are.
Then, I will asses their proficiency, and we can determine, at the first session, whether or not I am a good fit for the student.
I will tailor instruction to the individual student, creating material that suits their needs.

I have given instruction to students of all ages and skill levels.
I work well with children, and folks with special needs.

Please do not consider lessons if you are not prepared to practice a lot in between sessions. You are wasting both of our time. Progress is the greatest reward for both student and teacher.

My first in-person performance after the pandemic was a relief. I performed in an Easter quartet. Musicians are social creatures. The pandemic has been very difficult for them.

Details

I am able to travel to the students' home, within a reasonable distance. My lessons last between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on material and attention span.

My basic rates are $65 per weekly visit. If the location is within 5 miles away, that rate is reduced to $45 per visit. I can alternate between in-person and online lessons as needed. The rate for online lessons is $25 per session, but in-person lessons are required at least every other week.
