About Thomas

I'm a computer science professional and military veteran, dedicated to helping others learn to be an expert in their field. I've taught several subjects over the years, including martial arts for 5 years, technical instruction for industry certifications 2 years, and piano for nearly 10 years.

I love learning new things and am currently working on my second bachelor's degree in computer science for cyber security and information assurance and have multiple industry certifications. I find teaching to be the most rewarding work out of all the hats I've worn, because there's nothing like watching a person learn, grow, and become successful.

About the lesson

While I primary teach to adults at the undergraduate college level, I also provide lessons for high school students curious about computer science and programming who want to get their hands wet learn more about whether it's a career they might want to pursue.

For adult learners, if they're a college student I tailor the course to the current level of the student and the class(es) that the student has taken and are currently pursuing. While I have learned a few immutable best practices to follow in computer science, my primary goal is not to achieve rote memorization, but instead for the student to understand and master the fundamentals of the course. In doing so, students "learn how to learn", and become more adaptable to rapidly changing technology.

By the time I finished university many of the languages we were taught were already outdated; but because of excellent instructors who taught me well, being able to adapt and overcome industry changes has been the biggest driver of my success in the industry. My lessons will not only help you pass the class or certification exam with a stellar grade, but it will also give you the skills to continue being a student long after graduation.

Details

Will travel based on distance and time, generally I prefer to meet for the first lesson over webcam to avoid unnecessary travel, but will work with the student's individual needs. If my schedule is full I can still put you on a wait list and let you know when I have time to make an appointment.

Cancellation policy is simple: with the exception of emergent events or injuries or weather, 48 hours notice is required for a cancellation; inside of 48 hours and up to 24 hours before, you are allowed to reschedule for free. Cancellations made inside of 48 hours will be charged 50% of the class fee, and inside of 24 hours will be charged the full class fee. Again, unexpected things happen so I'll work with everyone; I've never had an issue with cancellations in the past.
