Are you struggling with a dissertation, thesis, journal article, book proposal, or other substantial writing project?
Perhaps you need a critical friend, someone who can review your work, provide constructive feedback, help you maintain momentum, and identify practical ways to strengthen your writing.
Whether you are planning a dissertation, preparing a thesis for submission, developing a publication strategy, or pitching essays to journals and magazines, I can help you refine your ideas, sharpen your arguments, and produce work of the highest standard.
I am an Honorary Research Fellow at Durham University and the British School at Rome. I am the author of three books and the editor of a collection of essays. My most recent book, Twinkind, was reviewed and featured in The Times, Financial Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Hyperallergic, Times Radio, and NPR, and was selected by The New Yorker as one of its books of the year.
Alongside my research and publishing work, I have many years of teaching experience at leading universities, including Imperial College London, Durham University, and Goldsmiths, University of London. I hold a PhD in Literature and Cultural History and specialise in the humanities and social sciences. I have also been invited to lecture at institutions including the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University College London, Pratt Institute (New York), the University of Bristol, Aarhus University, Lund University, and the Royal College of Music.
As a professional editor, I have worked with publishers and organisations including Bloomsbury, Pluto Press, and the British Medical Journal.
I offer detailed academic and editorial guidance tailored to your goals, including one-to-one online consultations, in-document feedback and editing, and follow-up advice. Sessions typically last one hour and are designed to provide practical, actionable support that helps you move your project forward with confidence.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Will has been tremendously supportive of my academic endeavours, above all my dissertation. Returning to learning after some twenty years, I found him invaluable, not only in helping me recover a long dormant academic skillset (research, writing, even tutorial preparation) but in guiding me through the demands of a substantial piece of independent research, showing me how to focus and deploy my experience, skills, and passion in a way that was both meaningful and academically successful.
William has been an incredibly helpful and indispensable person for my writing across a few different projects over the last few years.
He is very approachable and is always happy to share ideas even when they might rub be up the wrong way because his focus is always on making sure that my essays/blogs are of the highest standards possible but always whilst maintaining my ideas and voice.
