About Roma
I am from Belfast and have spent the last 8 years in England in higher education, gaining an undergraduate degree and on the way to a PhD.
During my PhD, I had the opportunity to teach and assist on undergraduate courses which is where I began to enjoy teaching! I found that explaining concepts little by little to get to the full picture was the way I found success in helping the students. The biggest joy I had with teaching was helping a student understand a concept that I too didn't understand when I was in their shoes. To help them get a better mark when all they needed was a bit of confidence in asking. A lot of the time in chemistry, the language can seem complex and daunting - by taking away the fear and making language more accessible, a lot more people I believe would enjoy Chemistry.
My biggest ethos has been to never make anyone feel stupid about not knowing something as I knew what that felt like.

My teaching approach focuses on contextualising difficult Chemistry concepts and breaking them down in an understandable way for the student. Chemistry at GCSE and A Level introduces abstract concepts without the full picture which many students understandably struggle with. With my undergraduate and soon to be doctoral level areas of expertise, I find real world examples as an aid to learning so that the basic principles are understood which can then be applied. In addition, assistance with practice paper questions and setting my own questions for students enables them to apply their level of understanding whilst highlighting the areas they are struggling to grasp. I always let my students know there are never any silly questions.
