About Rosa

I'm a passionate educator with five years of classroom experience and a Master's degree in Middle Level Education from the University of Pennsylvania. My teaching philosophy centers on building confidence, breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps, and creating inclusive learning spaces where every student feels supported and capable.

I specialize in helping students who struggle with reading, writing, and math develop both academic skills and genuine confidence. I've worked with diverse learners—including neurodivergent students, English language learners, and students who've experienced academic frustration—and I know firsthand how transformative patient, structured instruction can be.

Beyond the classroom, I'm an avid athlete who plays on USTA singles and mixed doubles tennis leagues. Tennis has taught me resilience, strategic thinking, and the importance of consistent practice—principles I bring directly into my tutoring. I believe in meeting students where they are, celebrating small wins, and helping them see that growth happens through persistence and the right support system.

I'm bilingual in Spanish and English, which allows me to connect with diverse students and families. I'm also deeply committed to culturally responsive teaching—honoring students' backgrounds, identities, and experiences as central to their learning.

When I'm not tutoring or on the court, you'll find me hiking, exploring outdoor spaces, or engaging with my community. I'm excited to work with students ready to build stronger reading, writing, and math skills while discovering their own capability and confidence.

I use evidence-based, student-centered instruction grounded in:

Scaffolding & Structured Breakdown: I deconstruct complex tasks into manageable steps using graphic organizers (CODE organizers, Argument Structuring Templates, SOAP analysis) so students build confidence progressively

Culturally Responsive Teaching: I honor diverse backgrounds and learning styles, creating inclusive spaces where all students feel seen and valued

Active Engagement: Rather than passive lecture, I use interactive techniques—collaborative problem-solving, guided questioning, peer dialogue—to deepen understanding

Data-Driven Feedback: I assess student progress regularly and adjust instruction to target specific gaps

Bilingual Support: I leverage Spanish fluency to support ELL learners and create accessible, multilingual learning environments when needed

What Sets Me Apart
✓ Graduate-level training: M.S. Ed. with ELA certification ensures research-based instruction, not just tutoring tips

✓ Proven track record: Achieved "Distinguished" status by moving 63% of students up proficiency levels in evidence-based writing

✓ Patience + High Expectations: I balance encouragement with accountability—students feel supported and challenged

✓ Builds Genuine Rapport: Five years of classroom experience means I know how to create trust, especially with students who've been frustrated or discouraged

✓ Specialized in Literacy Gaps: My expertise is closing reading and writing deficits, not generic homework help

✓ Adaptable & Responsive: I adjust strategies in real-time based on student needs, frustration levels, and learning style

Who These Lessons Are For

Primary Focus:

Middle & High School Students (Grades 6-10) struggling with ELA, reading comprehension, writing, and essay organization

Students performing below grade level in literacy who need structured, patient support

Students with learning differences (including neurodivergent learners like those with autism) who benefit from clear scaffolding and supportive environments

Secondary Focus:

Algebra support for middle/early high school students
ELL/Bilingual learners who benefit from Spanish-language scaffolding

Students who've experienced academic frustration or avoidance and need confidence-building

Ideal Student Profile:

Needs step-by-step guidance and clear structure

Responds well to encouragement and positive reinforcement

Benefits from breaking assignments into manageable parts

Values building a strong tutor-student relationship

May struggle with confidence but has capacity to grow with support

Why This Approach Works

Students don't just improve their grades—they rebuild confidence, develop independent strategies, and learn that struggle is part of growth. That's transformative tutoring.
