About Emma-Louise
My name is Emma-Louise and I am a 20-year-old Biomedical Science student who is studying in Scotland. I am about to enter the final year of my undergraduate degree, but I am hoping to continue studying to obtain a Ph.D. in Neuropsychology.
I am passionate about academia, although as a student with dyslexia, I understand that learning is not always straightforward. I do my best to overcome my difficulties and problem-solve new methods of study, discovering which style works best for me, and allowing me to still achieve top grades.
I have been playing piano for 14 years, and clarinet for 6, and over the years I have completed numerous ABRSM exams (both practical and theory).
However, music theory was something that I struggled with for a long time. I could not wrap my head around the complex concepts, and I was frustrated that I seemed to never be progressing. I felt like I wanted to just give up.
So, when I realised that I had to sit the grade 5 music theory exam in order to progress further through the practical exam levels, I was filled with dread. I did not enjoy studying it and thought that I would never be able to pass.
I spent a lot of time and energy going over the grade 1-5 music theory material. I taught myself everything that I needed to know in a way that I found fun and engaging, and soon I realised that I was understanding all of the complicated concepts that I used to give up on. I started to see the logic behind the theory and began to actually enjoy the time I was spending figuring it out. Eventually, my hard work paid off and I passed my grade 5 music theory exam with a merit.
Now that I have an understanding of the material, I would like to spend my free time putting my music theory knowledge to good use by helping others who may be in a similar position to the one I was in to achieve the marks of their dreams and progress with their music career.

As a teacher, my goal is to make learning music theory a fun and enjoyable task for the student.
For each session, I draw up a lesson plan and create a list of objectives that we aim to cover by the end of our class. I try to adapt my lesson plans in a way that would best suit the style of learning of the particular individual.
To understand what style of teaching works best for the student, I like to offer one FREE online lesson. This is time that we can use to get to know each other, and ask any outstanding questions, and allows me to get a basis for their current understanding of music theory. This means that I can plan and structure my lessons more effectively. Students can also send in examples of previous work that they have completed so that I can better understand their preferred learning methods.
Each lesson is typically 1 hour long, but I usually have the flexibility to schedule extra sessions for students who are struggling with a particular concept, or for those with upcoming exams.
My lessons are aimed at those that are beginner-intermediate level. I strive to ensure that the student feels fully prepared to pass grade 1-5 ABRSM music theory exams.
