About Laura
I specialise in performing on historical and modern flutes, and have performed and recorded with leading ensembles such as the London Handel Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Academy of Ancient Music.
I'm the Founder, Artistic Director and Principal Flute of The Vauxhall Band, for whom I research and curate concert programmes, lead artistic and educational projects, and manage the organisation’s day-to-day activities. I'm also Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Keen to share my experiences, I've devised and performed in composition, academic and education projects for The Vauxhall Band, including masterclasses for the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music, community projects for schools, care homes and the Classical Vauxhall festival.
Alongside my private teaching, I'm Flute and Music Theory Teacher at Graveney School in London, and have private students of both modern and historical flutes. My previous teaching experience includes modern and baroque flute tuition for the University of East Anglia.
I received a MA in Historical Performance from the Royal Academy of Music, where I studied baroque and classical flutes with Lisa Beznosiuk and Rachel Brown, supported by the Winifred Disney Award. I won the prestigious Early Music Prize and graduated with Distinction.
In addition, I read music at the University of East Anglia, receiving a BA (Hons) and a MMus in Performance Studies. I was awarded four major bursaries for performance studies from the School of Music (Hilda Houssart, Britten-Pears, Imogen Holst and Frank Thistlethwaite Scholarships), which enabled me to receive modern and baroque flute lessons from William Sleath.

I’m a professional flute teacher based in London and a freelance flautist specialising in historical performance.
I teach students of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to advanced players, university students and adult learners. I offer lessons on modern, baroque and keyed classical flutes, as well as music theory tuition up to ABRSM Grade 5. New students are welcome for in-person lessons in London and online tuition.
My teaching experience includes more than 20 years of private tuition, work for schools projects, teaching modern and baroque flute students at the University of East Anglia, performing in orchestral training projects at the University of Chichester, and devising education projects for The Vauxhall Band at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music.
I’m currently Flute and Music Theory teacher at Graveney School in London, where I also direct the Flute Ensemble and Early Music Ensemble. I tailor lessons to each individual student, whether working towards exams and auditions, building confidence and technique, returning to playing after a break, or simply learning for enjoyment.
I aim to create a supportive and engaging environment in which students can develop strong technical foundations, musical understanding and confidence in performance.
My private students have included children, adult beginners, advanced amateur musicians and students preparing for conservatoire auditions and diploma examinations. Former students have gained music scholarships to leading independent schools and achieved success in graded exams, auditions and performances.
Lessons are available in Maida Vale, London, or online via Zoom.
I hold a current DBS certificate and have extensive experience teaching children and young people.

Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Laura has been teaching my daughter for about 16 months. During this time Darcy has gone from being practically a beginner to Grade three with amazing exam results.
Laura is warm, friendly and very encouraging, always offering positive feedback. With Laura's help and dedication Darcy has recently been awarded a music scholarship to the secondary school of our choice. I am positive that this would not have been achievable without Laura's hard work and influence. An experienced player of the modern flute I have recently started learning the baroque flute under Laura's expert guidance. My lessons are very rewarding and enjoyable. Highly recommended.
Laura is an exceptional flute teacher. If you are looking for someone who teaches the baroque flute in a very precise, correct way, I can highly recommend her. I really got my basics right with her and I appreciate that we talk about the historical background, too. I enjoy every lesson. We practice different styles (French, German, etc.). Whenever I need to clarify something or when I am unsure, Laura always helps me and keeps me on the right track.
Laura is a fantastic teacher. Attentive, patient, and skilled in her craft; making learning the flute a really enjoyable experience. I highly recommend her.
Laura has been giving my daughter Bianca flute lessons for around 2 years and during this time she always looks forward to her lessons. Laura is very patient and always gives her positive feedback and encouragement. Bianca has learnt to play the flute to grade 2 standard thanks to Laura. Laura is still teaching my daughter and she is very happy.
Laura taught my daughter the flute for a couple of years before she moved to London. She was an excellent teacher, very patient and very positive. Her love for baroque music rubbed off on to my daughter who still enjoys playing this style of music above all others.
It's such fun learning the flute with Laura, she's always very encouraging and both my technique and tone improved dramatically over the time she was teaching me.
My daughter had flute lessons in school for a couple of years & made little progress. At my insistence her teacher finally signed her up for Grade 2. When I found out what the exam entailed & was only a few weeks away, she was unlikely to pass. A friend recommended Laura, who gave my daughter 3 one-hour lessons. Laura was warm, welcoming, kind, encouraging, clear & focused & my daughter improved tremendously. My daughter not only passed the exam, but received distinction, a real tribute to Laura's teaching
