As a teacher, the key reading skills I focus on, in line with the new Australian 9.0 curriculum, include decoding, phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, prediction, summarizing, inferencing, visualization, text structure awareness, critical thinking, skimming and scanning, making connections, annotation, paraphrasing, questioning, sequencing, synthesizing, and monitoring and self-correction. These skills help my students accurately pronounce words, understand sounds, grasp word meanings, read fluently, interpret text, anticipate content, identify main points, draw logical conclusions, create mental images, recognize organizational patterns, analyze content, quickly gather information, relate text to their prior knowledge, make notes, restate information, ask questions, follow the order of events, combine information, and self-correct misunderstandings. Emphasizing inferencing, the new curriculum highlights its importance in enabling students to draw logical conclusions and understand implied meanings, fostering deeper comprehension and critical thinking. Lessons are available online via Skype with hours open from 8 am to 9 pm Monday to Friday during term and school holidays. Lessons are also available during student-free days. After each lesson, homework is provided to ensure that you feel that you have the knowledge and skills to complete by yourself. I believe in providing a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions about the lesson or areas in school they are struggling with. Lessons are available in one or two-hour block lessons for students from pre-Prep to Year 10. All worksheets are sent before the lesson for printing. This includes a copy of the homework which we will discuss before the end of the lesson. As this is tutoring for reading we provide a list of books that we will read together as an additional part of the lesson. These books can be borrowed from the local library or bought new from various book sites. I do offer specialized reading for students with communication issues. With books for phonics sent to be printed before the lesson.
