I approach each topic by breaking it down into what a student finds difficult and what a student is confident in. For the difficult sub-topics, I would go over the bare fundamentals and make sure the student understands what and why something works so it's easier to apply and memorize it. I wouldn't neglect what they are confident in which is where many people go wrong. I would give students very complex questions and practices so they can find small imperfections in their work faster and become even better at the topics they feel confident in.
