About Fiona

Fiona began her flute studies at the age of 9 in her home town of Southampton. At the age of 15 she joined the Southampton Youth Orchestra, where she discovered her love for orchestral music. This passion for music took her to Bristol University, where she studied for a BA (Hons) in Music. After graduating in 2012, she moved to Cardiff to study for a Performance MA on the flute at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. During her time at both RWCMD and Bristol University, Fiona had many opportunities to perform with orchestras. At RWCMD, she was also a member of Chamber Winds, a chamber ensemble that reached the finals of Band Cymru, S4C’s televised competition. After graduating from her Masters, Fiona returned to Bristol to teach. She currently teaches woodwind for West of England Music and Arts (WEMA); flute and recorder at Sea Mills Primary and Stoke Bishop Primary; and teaches flute and piano privately. She has also previously taught flute at Sidcot School. She continues to play the flute for her own enjoyment and is often asked to play with various Bristol based orchestras. She has also performed with the chamber music ensemble, Bella Armonia, a group based around the Southampton area. Fiona loves teaching and helping other people improve. She finds it so rewarding to look back and see how far her pupils have come and to see how much their love for music has grown.

About the lesson

Fiona is a friendly teacher who is flexible and aims to meet the needs of every individual pupil. She loves helping each pupil find ways of improving their playing, whatever their standard. Fiona is happy to work through graded exams or to work on other things. She will take her lead from what the pupil would like. Her students have a 100% pass rate in music exams. She focuses on creating a good foundation of rhythm, reading music and flute technique. Her aim is to empower her students to be able to pick up something they'd like to play and be able to work it out themselves. With her more advanced pupils, Fiona focuses on tone, flute technique and expression. Fiona has over 11 years of teaching experience, from primary school age children up to retired adults. Fiona currently teaches with The West of England Music and Arts (WEMA), and teaches at Sea Mills Primary School and Stoke Bishop Primary School. She also offers private lessons on the flute and piano in her house in Sea Mills. Previous teaching engagements also include teaching the flute at Sidcot School. She has an ABRSM Teaching Diploma and took a module in Advanced Teaching Skills whilst at the Royal Welsh College. She also has a DBS certificate. Lessons are usually 30 minutes, but can be longer if you wish.
