About Benn

I am qualified with two Postgraduate masters in screen writing and writing for television. This year one of my scripts was short listed for production With BBC. I love screen writing and I know so many other people do too and you’re the people I want to talk to.

About the lesson

So the first thing we must acknowledge about this course is also one of the best things; this is a course in creative writing and that means that the first rule is to remember that every single writer is different as is every process and journey.

There’s no wrong way to write, but there are certain things that should be observed in creating any functional script, there’s a craft and like any craft it needs to be taught, the only reason I know it is because I was taught it. And it is these things that I will In turn teach you. So here we have the first element of my teaching emerging; learning the separation between ‘creative’ choices and ‘craft‘.

But craft is open to interpretation, there are so many views and books Gil of truths on the subject of creative writing that seem to do nothing but contradict each other. And create questions -
“Are there 5 acts or 3?”
“How many archetypes are there?”
“How many basic plots? 7 or 1, there is only the heroes journey.”

The truth is that none of these books despite what they say actually hold the true, one and only, best way to write, what they hold are different perspectives and approaches. And so it’s here that we start, with a small overview of what has so far been said on the subject and by who. It’s up to you who you listen to, even if it’s none of them!

Once we know what others think, we can start to decide what we think. From here we will look at some of the fundamentals of screen writing -
Generating ideas
Theme
Plotting
Structure
Story Lining
Character
POV
Dialogue
Scene Structure
Formatting
Completion and understanding the market.

By the end of this course students will have at least one fully functional feature length script in either film or television, ready to enter into any cold read opportunities that they wish.

Sound daunting? It isn’t, once you know the craft!
