About Jialan

Hi, I am a theatre director and a Mandarin teacher. From a very early age, I've realised that language is the window of the mind to perceive the world, so both my English and Chinese have been very good. Back in China, I worked as an English tutor for a short while and found my passion in teaching language. After coming to UK for a year's theatre study, I have been a Mandarin tutor for students of all stages for 7 months and have developed lots of effective methods.

I always look for fun and creative way of learning and teaching languages. My students enjoy my lessons, and I enjoy making the learning process fun and effective. I teach everyone differently, the content and games are designed according to their needs and interests. I also teach and encourage my students to explore the language on their own and not just wait for lessons. Inspired by many of the brilliant teachers that enlightened me, I always keep my students fully engaged and encouraged. Graduated from college with a psychology degree, I understand the importance of learning in a systematic, scientific way. With my theatre training background, I use highly interactive and fun games to help my students to remember the words easily and learn the language through using it in different model situations.

I also enjoy lots of Chinese ancient and modern poems, so I am willing to share the culture behind this beautiful language! I have perfect pronunciations in Mandarin, and I understand nuances in choosing different words and tones. I was an actress in China before so I am super sensitive to language.

I can also teach Cello at beginner level. I have passed Grade 8 test after only 4.5 years learning and I think it is because I started with very good habit of learning cello. I am happy to share my insights with anyone that might need help.

Perfect! inspiring Mandarin teacher
Jialan is a very creative and inspiring teacher. She adapts her teaching style indiviidually on the student. She suggests books and makes learning Madarin fun for my dauchgter (11 years old) by using stickers and playing games. You feel that Jialan is enjoying teaching. My daughter likes her lessons very much!
