About Tara Jo

I genuinely love to sew, and I love helping other people discover how fun and empowering it can be. Sewing gives you the freedom to make clothes that actually feel like you, fit your body the way you want them to, and express your personality instead of settling for what’s on the rack.

My goal is to make sewing feel approachable, creative, and fun, whether you’re making your first pair of pants or finally tackling that pattern that’s been sitting in your closet. There’s no pressure to be perfect here...just come ready to learn, make things, and have a good time.

About the lesson

My teaching approach

- Hands-on and practical: We’ll learn by actually sewing, not just talking about sewing.
- Project-based: Bring something you’ve been wanting to make, and we’ll use it as an opportunity to learn new skills.
- No question is too basic: I’ll explain sewing terminology and techniques in a way that’s easy to understand.
- Learn at your pace: We’ll focus on the skills you need and spend more time on anything that feels challenging.

What a typical lesson looks like

- Start with your goals, questions, or a project you’re working on.
- I’ll demonstrate the technique or skill we’re working on.
- You’ll try it yourself while I guide you and troubleshoot along the way.
- We might work on things like reading a pattern, using your sewing machine, cutting fabric, garment construction, fitting and alterations, or specific sewing techniques.
- Finish with a clear idea of what you’ve learned and what you can practice or work on next.

What sets me apart

- I’m an active garment sewist and part-time tailor, so I’m constantly learning and applying these skills in real projects.
- I’m largely self-taught, so I understand how confusing sewing can feel when you’re first starting out.
- I focus on helping you understand why you’re doing something, not just following instructions.
- I believe there’s rarely only one “right” way to sew something. I’ll help you find techniques that work for you and your project.

- Beginner sewists who want to build confidence and learn garment construction.
- Intermediate sewists who want help with a particular technique or project.
- Anyone who wants help with a specific pattern, garment, fitting issue, alteration, or sewing problem.
- Lessons can be tailored to your experience level, interests, and goals.
