About Ben

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have 26 years of teaching experience at both GCSE and A level Geology: 1989-2010 at Monmouth Comprehensive School and 2010-2015 at Truro School (independent). I also have experience in adult education, both teaching adult students and at teacher training colleges, where I have delivered workshops for trainee Geology and general science teachers while working for the ESEU (Earth Science Education Unit - based at Keele University)..

Before teaching, I decided that if I was going to prepare young people for the outside world I had better go there myself before starting teaching. I worked in oil exploration for a few years as a 'Formation Evaluation Geologist' (or 'Mudlogger') in the North Sea, Syria, Turkey, Tanzania and Kenya before embarking on a 6 month trip through Nepal, India and across Africa, returning to do my PGCE teacher training course. For the last 12 years I have also spent my summer holidays leading month long adventure travel expeditions for sixth form students in Africa, South America and Asia.

I have a current DBS certificate.

If you are struggling with your study of Geology I can help you! I have 26 years of Geology teaching experience and resources and I have a personal passion and enthusiasm for the subject.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Geology at GCSE, GCSE AS, GCE A2, Undergraduate first year Geology / related courses.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I achieved a BSc in Geological Sciences at Birmingham University in 1985.
I achieved a PGCE at Newcastle University in 1989.
I also have experience of working in the oil exploration industry.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £30 per hour for GCSE and £40 for A-Level. Where working with two or three students at one location I charge a base rate (£30 for GCSE, £40 for A level) and £20 per additional student, up to a maximum of 3 students. I have tutored two or three students at a time, and it can work well if the students are studying the same syllabus and have a good relationship.

- Where do you teach?

I can teach anywhere within 50 miles of Porthtowan TR4, eg Truro, Penzance, Newquay, St Austell, Falmouth.

- When are you available?

I am flexible as far as availability is concerned - please contact me for details.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I have 26 years of teaching experience at both GCSE and A level Geology.
I also have experience in adult education.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Geology GCSE, GCE AS, GCE A2
I can also provide support for first-year University Geology and related courses.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I have experience of delivering a GCE A2 Geology distance learning course for three schools via Skype. I am flexible and can provide bespoke service online depending on your specific requirements.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Geology is great: If you cannot grow it you have to dig it up - so Geology is the hottest subject for the coolest students!
