About Marianne

I wanted to speak Spanish from the time I was in grade school; so as soon as I entered the ninth grade I threw myself into my Spanish studies. When I graduated high school the teachers said that I was the first student ever to graduate from their school being fluent in Spanish. I continued to study Spanish in college, and I have never stopped! As far as teaching: I began teaching/directing all K-12 subjects as a home educator in September of 1995. Since that time I have branched out into teaching as substitute for all subjects for grades K-8 in two private schools and into teaching as a Spanish substitute in the Naperville CUSD 203 school district. I have also been teaching Spanish as private tutor for over 13 years: I have logged over 4,000 hours with over 370 students from all over the country! One of my students--to whom I taught all of Spanish 1--was able to test out of Spanish at one of the Naperville CUSD 203 high schools as in incoming freshman and go right into Spanish 2. He spoke Spanish so well in the initial introductory conversation with the World Languages chair that he was able to skip the written test! He is just one example of the incredible progress that many of my students are able to make under my tutelage. So many others who have gone from failing Spanish class to being A students. One parent said, "So far my daughter has seen Marianne twice. My daughter said that in the two 90 min lessons she has had with her, she is understanding and remembering more than in the year she took in class between 7th and 8th grades." (Lisa, Darien, IL). About the lesson

I involve the student as much as possible throughout each tutoring session rather than just talking at him. I take a new student back to the very beginning of Spanish grammar: subject pronouns. From there I walk the student step-by-step through each grammar concept. I smoke out the missing pieces in a student's grammar foundation, and through the use of interactive online lessons, I help each student to gain the confidence he needs to move forward. I engage each student in speaking, reading, and writing of Spanish during each session, and my favorite exercise is what I call "teacher as the student": I ask a student to explain/"teach" all he understands about a particular concept as if I were a beginning Spanish student. This not only reveals the areas needing attention but it also cements the correct understanding the student already has. It is very effective!
